Music in St Mary’s this May

For centuries St Mary’s has been an important centre for music. When it reopens its doors to visitors in May, music will play a special part in welcoming people back into the beautiful building.

On 18th – 22nd May, pianist Libby Burgess will be giving daily lunchtime concerts in the nave of St Mary’s. The performances in St Mary’s mark the start of Libby’s 2021 tour of all 48 counties of England, and will be some of the first live music-making in public in the entire country after the current lockdown.

Libby is a cherished member of the St Mary’s community and we’re honoured to be hosting the start of her amazing Project 48. With its peaceful atmosphere and incredible acoustic, St Mary’s is a very special place for music, and these free concerts in St Mary’s will give us the chance to pause and reflect after a difficult year.

Rev’d Becky Lumley, Vicar

Project 48 will see Libby travelling thousands of miles around the country, raising money for four national musical charities – whose work is needed now more than ever. The music she is playing, J.S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier (also known as the “48”), is a masterpiece of Western art, only rarely performed in its entirety. The concerts in St Mary’s mark the start of that epic journey.

The first collection of fully-worked keyboard pieces in all musical keys, The Well-Tempered Clavier is a landmark in music. It also covers a universe of emotions, encompassing music of searing beauty, joy, sadness, spirituality, profundity, and humility. And so we’ve called the concerts in St Mary’s “Music of the Spheres”!

Roland Deller, Development Director

Libby will be performing in St Mary’s on a Faziloli concert grand piano kindly being provided by Jaques Samuel Pianos in London. Also on show in the church when it reopens will be a new exhibition about the stone carvings installed in 2020 based on characters from the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

We look forward to welcoming you to St Mary’s for these special events, and we hope that you enjoy the chance to spend a moment of quiet in its beautiful surroundings as the country emerges from lockdown. Appropriate measures will be in place to ensure your safety in St Mary’s including distancing, ventilation and sanitization. Retiring donations will be taken in aid of the four musical charities being supported by Project 48 (find out more about those charities below).

"Some journeys take us far from home. Some adventures lead us to our destiny."
C.S. Lewis
